What are India's top credentials for Oracle-certified professionals?Hello everyone! It’s been a long time since I last wrote for GoCertify India, and I’m excited to once again share a bit of my knowledge and experience on Oracle certifications with you all. In particular, I’d like to discuss which Oracle certs are the best ones from the perspective of India’s IT market.

Certification always adds a feather to your cap. A large, colorful feather which is easily visible to the HR department and hiring managers. It also adds a level of visibility to a company’s clients as well, which further encourages organizations to hire somebody with an Oracle certification.

Friends and acquaintances often complain that the market is tough and that they are not getting interviews.  Fortunately, being double-certified by Oracle myself, the feedback and the advice I give is that the market is just as it always was.

India is still the fastest growing economy in the world, which means we are generating new jobs at a greater rate than any other nation. You just have to approach it in the right fashion. The market for “true” professionals is always great. And it continues to be great even today despite all the turbulence going on. There are certain rules of operating, which makes it easy once you know and play by them.

Just imagine the plight of the poor HR manager who just opened a vacancy. He is bombarded by hundreds, if not thousands, of applications with similar backgrounds and experience. How does he make the decision as to who to reject and who to invite for an interview?

At first glance, he looks for certain key points, like the exact words that the project manager asked for in the job requirements. Unfortunately, most of the applications contain the correct keywords and phrases. So now the wise recruiter looks for out-of-the-ordinary achievements that the candidate might have, which would make them a strong candidate to the project manager. Yes, you guessed it right. The answer is a “certification.”

Oracle certifications mean “proven” expert

Whether you are a fresher, looking to break in, or an experienced IT pro, an Oracle certification on your resume is a plus, and just that extra bit can take you past the HR recruiter stage, and get you many more interviews for your next job.

Oracle technologies pay well, and from a career perspective, that’s always a plus. In my humble opinion, nothing matches the success you can achieve with Oracle certifications. To back up that claim, consider these Java stats as shared by Oracle:

  • 97 percent of Fortune 500 companies use Oracle software
  • 89 percent of desktops (or computers) in the U.S. run Java
  • 9 million Java developers worldwide
  • More than 305,000 top companies use Oracle database
  • No. 1 choice for developers
  • No. 1 development platform
  • 3 billion mobile phones run Java
  • 5 billion Java cards in use
  • 125 million TV devices run Java
  • 5 of the top 5 original equipment manufacturers ship Java ME

Here are five popular Oracle certifications that can help take your IT career in India to the next level.

Java SE 7 Programmer Certified Associate
Exam Name: Java SE 8 Programmer I
Certification Code: 1Z0-808
Oracle University (OU) Training Mandatory: No

Oracle is notorious for forcing certification aspirants to take their official OU courses. This is one certification track, however, which doesn’t have an OU training as a prerequisite. Although entirely optional, Oracle does recommend that participants take “Java SE 8 Fundamentals.”

Java is one of the hottest languages for budding computer professionals. It is used everywhere, for websites, complex web applications, mobile apps, and the IoT. The applications are endless, and so are the job opportunities.

Another advantage is that Java 8 is the latest version of Java. Thus, a certification in this field can directly give a head start, and put you ahead of the crowd who might still be stuck in an older version of Java. This certification is suited for freshers as well as more experienced professionals.

Individuals working in system administration, technical writing, web development and technical, project and program management will gain through this certification. To read more in depth about Java SE 7 Programmer Certified Associate and the exam, click here.

Java SE 7 Programmer Certified Professional
Exam Name: Java SE 8 Programmer II
Certification Code: 1Z0-809
OU Training Mandatory: No
Prerequisites: Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 8 Programmer

Java SE 7 Programmer Certified Professional is an advanced certification, and while it might be relatively easy for even a recent graduate, fresh out of college, to clear the Associate-level exam, the Professional certification clearly separates the grain from the chaff.

Candidates are required to have the associate level certification to be eligible to sit for the professional-level exam. The recommended course for preparing for this certification is “Java SE 8 Programming,” but it’s entirely optional.

While the Associate-level certification is more common, not too many people can boast of the “Java SE 8 Programmer II” certification. The competition when you are applying for a relevant open position will be smaller, increasing your likelihood of landing that dream job.

Oracle also has a Master-level certification that is based more on real-world, hands-on experience. The prerequisites include being an Oracle certified professional, Java (SE 5, SE 6, SE 7 or SE 8) Programmer or Sun Certified Java Programmer (any edition). Unfortunately, OU training is mandatory, which increases the costs for this certification. Due to the additional cost and prerequisites, this, despite being the highest level of certification, is not very popular.

Structured Query Language (SQL), is the most commonly used query language for working with RDBMS databases.
